Method 1
Form a contract with the judgment holder that assigns ownership to you with an “irregular payment plan”, meaning they get a percentage of what you collect, after any costs incurred during the enforcement process are deducted.
Example
You find a judgment that was awarded 2 years ago for $5,257.00 from a lawsuit involving an uninsured car accident.
The judgment holder assigns the judgment to you for enforcement with the agreement that you will pay them 50% of what you are able to collect. You run a skip trace, figure out where they bank, and seize the money in their account.
With a post-judgment interest rate of 10% over 2 years ($1,052.84), the judgment is now worth $6,309.84.
Your income for a few hours worth of work is $3,154.92; plus reimbursement for any costs incurred.
This method is the most commonly used in the industry and it’s the method I recommend to anyone who is just starting out.
If you can’t collect the judgment for any reason (or can only collect a portion of it), you’re not on the hook for anything other than your time and the small cost of trying to locate assets.
Method 2
Buy the judgment outright from the creditor for pennies on the dollar. No payment agreement. You keep everything you collect. Simple.
Example
You find a judgment that was awarded 5 years ago for $4,194.00 from a lawsuit involving a contractor who didn’t get paid for paving someone’s driveway.
You do some research and find that the debtor has a company in their name that’s still active.
This looks like an easy collection, so you purchase the judgment outright for $335.52 ($0.08 on the dollar).
With a post-judgment interest rate of 10% over 5 years ($2,099.30), the judgment is now worth $6,292.15.
Your income for a few hours worth of work is $5,957.78; plus reimbursement for any costs incurred.
This method is riskier but the reward is much higher.
Obviously, the risk is that if you buy the judgment and you can’t collect it right away, you’ve lost some money along with the cost of trying to collect.
But judgments are enforceable for many years and can be renewed in most states, so you might be able to collect it at some future point – and interest continues to add up.
Both methods transfer full ownership from the judgment holder to the assignee (you).
That’s important because it allows you to collect the judgment on your own behalf…
It’s also worth noting that judgments accrue simple interest from day one (about 10% depending on the state)… 2 or 3 years down the road, they’re worth a lot more than when they were first awarded.
Further, there’s no ‘expiration date’ on how long it’s assigned to you… you can continue to check back every few months to see if anything has changed with the debtor’s financial situation.
You can also record a “judgment lien”, meaning that if the debtor owns property (or acquires it in the future), your judgment lien will have to be paid before a there’s a clear title.
Some of our members utilize both methods by researching interesting judgments before soliciting the judgment holder.
If they think the debtor’s information will be easy to find, they’ll offer to buy it upfront hoping to score big… Otherwise they’ll offer the low-risk agreement.

You do some research and find that the debtor has a company in their name that’s still active.
This looks like an easy collection, so you purchase the judgment outright for $335.52 ($0.08 on the dollar).
With a post-judgment interest rate of 10% over 5 years ($2,099.30), the judgment is now worth $6,292.15.
Your income for a few hours worth of work is $5,957.78; plus reimbursement for any costs incurred.
This method is riskier but the reward is much higher.
Obviously, the risk is that if you buy the judgment and you can’t collect it right away, you’ve lost some money along with the cost of trying to collect.
But judgments are enforceable for many years and can be renewed in most states, so you might be able to collect it at some future point – and interest continues to add up.
Both methods transfer full ownership from the judgment holder to the assignee (you).
That’s important because it allows you to collect the judgment on your own behalf…
It’s also worth noting that judgments accrue simple interest from day one (about 10% depending on the state)… 2 or 3 years down the road, they’re worth a lot more than when they were first awarded.
Further, there’s no ‘expiration date’ on how long it’s assigned to you… you can continue to check back every few months to see if anything has changed with the debtor’s financial situation.
You can also record a “judgment lien”, meaning that if the debtor owns property (or acquires it in the future), your judgment lien will have to be paid before a there’s a clear title.
Some of our members utilize both methods by researching interesting judgments before soliciting the judgment holder.
If they think the debtor’s information will be easy to find, they’ll offer to buy it upfront hoping to score big… Otherwise they’ll offer the low-risk agreement.
